• Deposits - a deposit of 10% is required
• Approval in Principle - you cannot search for a house until you have this
• Budget -  figure out the max amount you can borrow and how much you can afford each month. Also need to factor in stamp duty, legal fees, engineers costs and others.
• Where do you want to live? - Location is the most important factor when it comes to deciding on your home 
• Family growth is another factor as a first time buyer
